Vintage Japanese Signed Wooden Rice Measuring Bucket Itomasu

This is a vintage early Showa Era Japanese wooden rice. This was a specific unit of rice (one masu) and was a standard used by rice stores throughout Japan in the late Meiji and Taisho eras. 18 liters (about 40 lbs) of rice.

There is a stamp branded on the sides with the rice store's name. (see pictures 7 and 8). Many additional smaller stamps are the brands given by government officials who have checked and approved this bucket to be an exact standard unit (one itomasu). On the bottom is the name of the store owner, Miyamoto Masao , as well as dates - Showa 26th September (1951) (see pictures 6 & 7).

Made of a lightweight yet very durable cryptomeria (cedar) wood. After nearly 70 years of careful use, along with a warm aged patina, it remains in. This itomatsu measures 12 1/2" in diameter by 12 1/2" tall (31.5 x 31.5 cm). There is a thick iron band around the top and bottom, as well as, down the sides and criss-cross across the bottom of the rice bucket. The wooden side handles aided in carrying this itomasu when full of rice. Customers would come to the rice store with their own bags to transfer the rice from the store's itomasu to their own bags.

I have found this antique wooden bucket to be the perfect size for many modern day uses: magazine and newspaper holder, powder room waste, kindling storage next to the fireplace, and many more. How would you use it?
