Up for sale is my 8 key Cocus 19th. Century flute, by Bernard Lee of London. This flute is in very good condition and in full playing order. The keys and rings are made from Nickel Silver. There are historic crack repairs to the head and barrel, one discreet repair in the back of the headjoint, clear of the embouchure, and four neat repairs to the barrel (see photos 5 & 6).
The C natural block has been professionally replaced in Cocus and is stylistically an excellent match (see photo 5). The original embouchure is crisp and clean, and is capable producing a reedy tone that is surprisingly powerful considering the medium sized tone holes.
The flute plays at A = 440 Hz, with a tuning slide extension of 10 mm. Its intonation is very good for a period instrument, with no flat foot, spot on F#, and only the A's and B's needing some slight lipping down. This slim and elegant flute is easy to fill, well balanced, and easy to handle, making it comfortable for longer periods of play.
As is often the case, the low C keys benefit from the application of some light oil before play. Bernard Lee was a composer and instructor of note in 19th Century London. This particular flute is stamped B.
